A panchayat town in Thoothukudi district of Tamil Nadu, Alwarthirunagiri lies on the banks of the river Tamirabarani. The birthplace of Nammalvar, one of the 12 Alvars of Vaishnavism, the town houses one of the nine temples (Navatirupati Kshetras) in the Tiruchendur-Tirunelveli route that is considered to be a part of the Divya Desams, the 108 temples of Vishnu revered by the 12 poetic saints. The Guru Kshethram (temple) has a very old tamarind tree that is believed to be the place where the saint meditated as an infant.
