Bihar Sharif

Bihar Sharif is the district headquarters of Nalanda district in Bihar. It is placed at Hiranya Prabhat Parvat and along the bank of River Panchanan, 75 km from Patna. Bihar Sharif, then called Bihar, was the headquarters of the Magadha kingdom in the medieval period. Later, the headquarters was shifted to Patna and the whole of Magadha region was named Bihar. The town is well known for the ruins of Nalanda, an ancient centre of higher learning.
