Ganga Sagar is located in the South 24 Paraganas of West Bengal. It is also known as the ‘Sagar Island’. Ganga Sagar is considered as the holiest place to take bath according to the Hindu tenets. It is second only to the Kumbha Mela-held once every 12 years. The importance of taking a dip in Ganga Sagar has been mentioned in the epic Mahabharata as explained by a Saint to Bhisma. It is place where Ganga drains into Bay of Bengal.

There are no hotels in Ganga Sagar. But there are few lodges and ashramas such as State youth Hostel (Tariff- Rs. 100), Bharat Sevashram Sangha (Tariff- Rs.100), and Howrah Welfare Trust (free services).
The official languages of Ganga Sagar are Bengali and English.
The only important event here is the Ganga Sagar Yatra which falls on Makar Sankranti day -14th or 15th January.

There are some tourist attractions other than Ganga Sagar such as the Kapil Muni temple at South Sagar (12 km), Sea Beach Beguakhali (10 km), and Ramkrisna Mission Ashram (10 km).

The nearest airport is the Kolkata Airport (129 km).
The nearest railway station is the New Jalpaiguri which is at a distance of 6.9 km.
The nearest bus station is in Kolkata. There are many buses from Kolkata to Cuttack, Siliguri, and Asansol. There are a few bus service providers such as Volvo Bus Services, Dolphin Bus, Eurolines, and Royal Cruiser that operate frequent busses to Ganga Sager. Booking a bus ticket in advance will save you a lot of hassle.
