A census town in the Sindhudurg district of Maharashtra, Kankavli is situated on the banks of two Rivers, the Gad River and the Janavli River. Surrounded by villages, the town is an important railway station on the Konkan Railway route. Kankavli is about 460kms away from Mumbai along the NH 17 and 137kms away from Ratnagiri. Famous for Sindhudurg Shikshan Prasarak Mandal's College of Engineering, the town is rich in culture, education and politics.

Places of interest in the town include the Bhalchandra Maharaj Ashram (1km), a mosque in the neighbouring Kalamath rural community (1km), Sindhudurg Fort (35kms) and the Savdav Waterfalls (15kms). Since the town is about 18kms away from Kumbhavade village, where the very popular Shree Mahalingeshwar Mandir is located. A Swayambhu Devasthan, the Mahashivratri Jatra is held every year at this temple.

All trains that passes through the Konkan route passes via the Kankavli Railway Station.
