About Kottayam

Kottayam

Kottyam city, also known as Akshara Nagari, is located on the South-central region/portion of Kerala and is a famous a gateway to the major pilgrim destinations. It is located at a distance of 67km from Kochi. The literal meaning of Kottyam is “inside of the fort”. While Kotta denotes fort akam implies inside. Originally set up on the hilltop, this was an old town marked by important commercial dealings and trade of crops, spices, rubber etc. The city is bordered on the east by the Western Ghats, while the Vembanad lake and Paddy fields of Kuttanad on the west.
