Earlier known as Mau Nath Bhanjan, Mau is a town located on the banks of River Ghaghra. A popular myth regarding its odd name is a play on the word meaning ‘barrack’ in Turkish. Many prominent rulers of India, including Akbar, Aurangzeb and Shershah Suri used the city for barracks. Today it is an important centre for textile weavers with saris and lungi being the main products.
