A hill station in the Idukki district of India’s “God’s own Country” - Kerala, Peerumedu is located 80 km from Kottayam and 130 km from Kochi. The beautiful scenery of the waterfalls, the green slopes and open grasslands makes it one of the best places for a weekend getaway. It was earlier used as a summer retreat by Maharajas of Travancore. The hill station is named after a Sufi saint, Peer Mohammed. It also has plantations of tea, coffee and cardamom.

Thekkady (25 km from Peerumedu) has many budget hotels. Some of them are Dreamland Homestay (Tariff – Rs. 1300), Hotel Sithara International (Tariff – Rs. 1000), Oasis Homestay (Tariff – Rs. 800) and Mount Sinai (Tariff – Rs. 500).
Malayalam is the official language of Peerumedu. The other language spoken here is English.
The important festivals of Peerumedu are Onam in August and Christmas in December.
Places of Interest
There are numerous places for one to visit at Peerumedu. Some of the best tourist spots are Thrissanku Hill (4 km) Kuttikkanam (9 km), Peeru Hills (1 km from Kuttikkanam), Grampi (5 km), and Periyar Tiger Reserve (32 km).
How to Get There
Cochin International Airport is nearest to Peerumedu. It is located about 120 km from the hill station.
There are many express trains to Kottayam (80 km from Peerumedu) from Chennai, Bangalore, Mangalore, Hyderabad and Vijayawada.
There are no buses to Peerumedu. However, one can reach Thekkady by bus. Private operators such as Royal Travels and SRS Travels provide bus services. Volvo bus is the most preferred choice of all travellers these days.
