Pokhran (also called Pokaran) is a desert city and a municipality situated in the district of Jaisalmer, Rajasthan. It belongs to the Pokaran panchayath, Jodhpur division. It is a fairly remote destination in the region of the Thar Desert. India conducted its first underground nuclear weapon detonation in Pokhran. It is surrounded by sandy, rocky salt ranges. Pokhran is also known as ‘the place of five mirages’ and is also a pilgrimage centre in Jainism.
