On the banks of Gandak river lies Sonepur, a town in Bihar’s Saran district. It attracts a huge number of tourists in November-December during one of the largest animal fairs in the world. It is a picturesque town with several stupas and Ashoka pillars on the banks of the river. It is well connected by road, air and rail, as Patna, its capital city is only 25 km away. Sonepur is also home to the eight largest railway platforms in the world.

Maithili, Bhojpuri, Hindi and Urdu are widely spoken in Sonepur.
The animal fair held in November-December during Kartik Poornima is a major event in the town.

Apart from the Ashoka pillars and stupas found in the town, there is the Hariharnath Mandir, which is worth visiting. Other places of interest nearby are Hajipur (7.3 km), Dighwara (22km) and Patna (27 km).

Patna Airport, which is 32 km from here, is the closest from the town.
Sonepur railway station is just a kilometer away from the town centre.
There are buses from Patna, Hajipur and Muzaffarpur. State-run buses operate its buses on this route. Bus ticket online booking facility is the most convenient way of booking your tickets.
