About Thalassery

Thalassery

Thalassery is a town rich in history, culture and heritage in the South Indian state of Kerala. It is a part of the Kannur district, adjacent to the Arabian Sea coast. The town itself lies on the coast. Thalassery has been famously and closely contested among different rulers at various stages of history – from the local Naduvazhis rulers to, Hyder Ali to the Europeans. History and heritage-lovers will find the place interesting.

The official language of the area is Malayalam. English is also widely understood.

Events
The important festivals celebrated are Vishu in April, Onam in August-September, the fasting Islamic month of Ramadan, the two Eid(s) and Christmas.

The town is abundant with tourist places, among which the must-see are the Thiruvangad Sree Ramaswami Temple, the Odathil Palli Mosque built 200 years ago, Mamanam Shri MahaDevi temple, Kottiyoor Vadakkeshwaram Temple and others. Some of the other places in Kannur which deserve special mention are St. Angelos Fort built by the Portuguese, the Thalassery Fort built by the British, the Ezhimala historical site established by the British, the Moppila Bay and others.

The town has its own railway station, which connects Thalassery to other major parts of the region.
