Tuticorin

Tuticorin is also popularly known as Thoothukudi. The word Thoothukudi derives its meaning from two Tamil words –Thootu (dig) and Kudi (drink). The region is most famous for Pearls and it is traditionally known for pearl fishing and ship industries. This place has a huge port and it is popular for it as Tuticorin is considered to be one of the oldest seaports in the world. The place is relatively warm and pleasant from January to March and is enjoyable to visit during these months.

Some of the interesting places that brings in different kinds of tourists to Tuticorin are the Paniya Matha Church (1km), Manapad (60kms),  Ottapidaram (22kms), Tuticorin Port (29 kms), Kattabomman Memorial Fort (20kms from bus stand), Kalakadu Wildlife Sanctuary (20kms east of old bus stand), Tiruchendur Temple (40kms) and The Basilica of the Lady of Snows (1.8kms).

How to Get There

Air:
Tuticorin Airport is located at Vagaikulam which is about 14 km from the heart of the city. The Government has been making plans to broaden and modernize the facility to include more aircrafts.

Rail:
Thoothukudi railway junction is considered to be one of the oldest railway stations in India. The first railway line between Madurai and Thoothukudi was established in 1874. Now the railway line connects to major cities which include Chennai to Tuticorin, Bangalore, Madurai, Mysore, Coimbatore and Tirunelveli.

Bus:
Thoothukudi New bus stand is located on Ettaiyapuram road; while the old bus station is situated in Palayamkottai road. These two bus stations serve local and interstate travelers.
