Varodara is formerly Baroda is the third most populated city in the state of Gujarat. Baroda is the capital city of the Gaekwar state, is situated on the banks of the River Vishwamitri. It is the administrative headquarters of Vadodara district.
Baroda is the eighteenth largest city in India. Due to its rich cultural traditions, the district is referred to as Sanskari Nagari. With many museums and art galleries, this upcoming hub of industries and IT is a favorite spot of tourist.
Baroda was once called Chandravati, after its ruler Raja Chandan, then Virakshetra or Viravati, the abode of the brave and then Vadpatra because of the abundance of banyan tress on the banks of the Vishwamitri. The city is divided into eastern and western parts by the river.
The former comprises of the old city, with crowded bazaars and colorful pols. The city also has Myraid temples and shrines, the regal Laxmi Vilas Palace and the famous Maharaja Sayajjrao University.
