Chennai is formerly known as Madras or Madarasapattinam. It is the capital of Tamil Nadu. Chennai being the fourth most populous metropolitan are and the fifth most populous city on India, it is also the world’s 36th largest metropolitan area. Chennai is located on the Coromandel Coast of Bay of Bengal.
Chennai’s economy has a broad industrial base in the automobile, computer, technology, hardware manufacturing, and healthcare industries. The city is India’s second largest exporter of software, information technology (IT) and information-technology-enabled services (ITES). Chennai is an important centre for Carnatic Music.
Two rivers meander through Chennai, the Cooum River through the centre and the Adyar River to the south. A third River, the Kortalaiyar flows through the northern fringes of the city. The Marina Beach runs for 12km along the shoreline of the city. Several lakes of varying size are located on the western fringes.
Santhome Basilica church, Velankanni Church, The Armenian Church, St. Thomas Mount Church, St. Andrews Church, St. George’s Cathedral, Descanso Church, Parathasarathy Temple, Kapaleeswarar Temple, Sri Vadapalani Andavar Temple, Ashtalakshmi Temple, Kaligambal Temple, Thirumalai Thirupathi Devasthanam Temple and Thousand light mosque are some important pilgrimage centre in Chennai.
