Ettumanoor is located in the state of Kerala. It is a major town and is located 11 km from the town of Kottayam and 65 km from Cochin. It is a connecting link to Cochin, the major commercial center of Kerala. This place falls on the way to wagamon and poonjar.
Places of tourist interest:
The ancient Siva Ettumanoor Mahadevar Temple here is the most famous tourist attraction in this place. According to the myths the Pandavas and the sage Vyasa had worshipped at this temple.
There are Dravidian paintings on the walls of the temple complex. The temple was reconstructed in 1542 AD. The temple is surrounded by a gopuram and a fortress. There is a golden flag staff inside the temple. On the top of it is the idol of a bull surrounded by small bells and metal leaves of the banyan tree. The temple roofs are covered with copper sheets and it has 14 ornamental tops. Sankaracharya the great Indian philosopher wrote the ‘Soundaraya Lahari’ staying in the temple.
This temple hosts the arattu festival celebrated on a grand scale on the Thiruvathira day in February–March every year. Lot of people comes to this temple on the 8th and 10th day of the festival. The temple, the wealthiest Devaswom in Kerala, has many valuable possessions.
Christuraj church (Christ the King Church) is one of the famous churches in Kottayam district. There are a number of mosques also. The most famous ones are the Kaithamala Muhiudheen Masjid and the Thazhathangady Juma Masjid.
