Haridwar

The city of Haridwar is the ultimate pilgrimage spot for the Hindus. A pilgrimage without visiting Haridwar is far from complete. It is located in the northern state of Uttarakhand and is the gateway of the Ganges after it has emerged from the Gangotri glacier.

PLACES OF TOURIST INTEREST:

Har ki Pauri is a ghat is very sacred to the Hindus and every year thousands of devotees come here to offer their prayers and also to commemorate the dead. This sacred ghat was constructed by King Vikramaditya.

Chandi Devi Temple is dedicated to goddess Chandi. It was originally built in the 8th century.

Mansa Devi Temple is dedicated to goddess Mansa. It is located on top of a hill and it is a popular tourist destination. There are cable cars taking one to the top of the hill from where one can have a full view of the city.

Maya Devi Temple is a very sacred temple where the heartand navel of goddess sati is believed to have fallen. To the south of kankhal town is situated the ancient temple of Daksha Mahadev.

Piran Kaliyar is a dargah was built by Ibrahim Lodi the ruler of Delhi.

In Neel Dhara Pakshi Vihar Bird watchers can have a grand time visiting this bird sanctuary as it has a collection of large number of birds and also birds migrate to this place during winter.

Bhimgoda Tank is situated close to har ki pauri and it has historical significance. Bharat Mata Mandir is a temple is dedicated to Bharat Mata.

One cannot leave haridwar without indulging themselves into shopping for handicrafts and similar items. A tourist comes to this place for visiting the holy places but cannot leave without shopping stone idols, beads, copper and brass puja utensils, glass bangles, cane baskets and jewellery.

Road:

Haridwar is well connected to all the major north Indian cities by road. National highway 58 connects it to a lot of places.

Railways:

The Haridwar railway station is an important station from where a number of trains run connecting Haridwar to a number of places like Delhi, Mumbai, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, etc.

Air:

The jolly grant airport in Dehradun is the nearest airport to Haridwar. The next nearest airport is New Delhi.
