Salem
Salem is a Municipal Corporation in the state of Tamil Nadu in India. It is the fifth largest city of the state and is located about 340km from Chennai. It has the oldest fort of the city and covers an area of 94 square kilometers.

It is also the urban conglomerate of Tamil Nadu. The name Salem comes from the Sanskrit word ‘Sailam’ which means mountain. As this place is nestled in the midst of the hills Nagaramalai, Jarugumalai, Kanjamalai and Godumalai towards the north, south, east and west respectively it is apt to be called Salem.
PLACES TO VISIT:
METTUR DAM: this dam located about 30km from Salem is the largest in the world. The water stored in this dam is used for irrigation purpose. The tourists can witness the hydroelectric power plants in this place.
SANKAKIRI FORT: This is one of the historic places of the region. It has been built on the Sankakiri hills. There are 5temples and 2mosques in this fort and St Anthony’s church can also be viewed from this fort.
JAMA MASJID: This is the oldest mosque in Salem and is located situated on the banks of the Thirumanimuthu Aru in the heart of the city. It was believed to be built by the then Mysore ruler, Tippu Sultan, who used to have offered prayers here.
POIMAN KARADU: This place when seen from a particular spot bears striking resemblance to a deer with two horns can be witnessed from a cave and is located on the Salem-Namakkal National Highway. This vision of the deer disappears when seen from some other angle.
BEARS CAVE: This cave with its enchanting beauty is often visited by the tourists and lies on the way to the Servaroyan temple. It is an important tourist attraction.
THE SERVAROYAN TEMPLE: It is on the top of the Sarovayan Hill and hence has got its name. The tribal people of the region come here to celebrate their annual festival.
