Vallam

Vallam is a city in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is basically a panchayat town in the Thanjavur District. Vallam is located about 10km from Tenkasi and lies about 53km north of Tirunelvi. Pandya kings are believed to have ruled Tensaki in 15-16thcentury centuries. Being the abode of the Vishwanatha temple, Tensaki is also known as the “Varanasi of South”

TOURIST DESTINATIONS: There are several places near Vallam that the tourists can visit. One such place is Chidambaram. The Chidambaram temple that is dedicated to Lord Shiva is famous for the five dancing halls of Lord Nataraja. Different hand-made artifacts of quality and splendor can also be found. Sriperumbudur is another place worth visiting. Vallakottai Murugan temple is the most famous temple of the region. Some of the other popular tourist destinations are Covelong, Kanchipuram and Tambaram.

Situated on the western Ghat, about 5km from Vallam is a place called Kuttalam (or Courtallam) that is known as the “Spa of the South”. The cascading waterfalls in this place are also considered to have medicinal properties. This waterfall flows through the herbal forests and hence gets its medicinal qualities.

SHOPPING PARADISE

The Vallam fabrics are very popular amongst the public. One can visit the fabricators and machine shops in Vallam Bangaru Street to get some of the best fabrics of the region.  There is a place called the Aluglass Tradings where one can find various glass items for home decoration including the glass canopies, doors, windows, false ceilings and ladders. Together with this one can also shop for aluminum doors, windows and fabrication products.

Ladies can visit the different jewellery shops in and around Vallur. There is a famous jewellery shop – Sri Ram jewelers where they can get choose from a wide range of jewellery. Gold, silver, platinum ornaments of various designs can be found in this shop. Some of the other shops include Jewellery palace, Alagu and Ashok jewelers.

For all the food lovers, a small town by the name of Border is a place worth visiting. This town is located in between Vallam and Sencottah and is famous for its mouth –watering parothas and chicken curry. The Border Parotha Stall is the place where one can tickle ones taste buds with the supremely delicious parotha and chicken curry.

GRT Regacy Kanchipuram, Le Waterina resort and spa, Fortune Kensis Hotel, Fortune Chariot Beach resort, Asian Hotel are some of the hotels where the tourists visiting Vallam can stay.

TRANSPORT:

The ideal time to visit Vallam would be between July-September. Chennai being nearest to this place, the best way to reach this place would be via Chennai. One can head to the nearest airports at Tuticorin, Thiruvananthapuram and Madurai for convenience.
