Virudhunagar previously known as Karmavirer Kamarajar District is a municipal and an administrative town located in Virudhunagar district of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It forms the headquarters of the district. “Virudhu” refers to Award in Tamil. This place is a business hub and exports all the agricultural products that it produces. The massive growth in trade and education led to the change in name of the place from as Karmavirer Kamarajar to Virudhunagar.
PLACES OF INTEREST:
VIRUDHUNAGAR MARIAMMAN TEMPLE: This four hundred year old temple has flocks of ardent devotees offering their prayers to the presiding deity Mariamman. ‘Panguni Pongal’, the yearly festival of the Tamilians are also celebrated here.
ARUPPU KOTTAI: This centre is famous for its handlooms. Ladies often end up buying innumerable cotton and silk sarees at reasonable prices from this centre. This is not only famous for its sarees but also for the woven towels, bed sheets, lungis etc.
AYYANAR FALLS: This waterfall cascading down the hills is a sight to behold. This place is only 12km from Virudhunagar and is one of the favourite picnic destinations of the region.
BHOOMINATHASWAMY TEMPLE: This temple located 40km form Virudhunagar has many devotees coming to offer prayers and services to Thunaimalai Amman. It is one of the most popular centres of the region.
KULLURSANDAI RESERVOIR: This place is one of the upcoming picnic spots. Provisions for boating are being made for the tourists coming to visit this place. This reservoir has been made on the Kowsiga Mahanadi and allures many pretty birds which enable the tourists to watch these beautiful creatures of nature.
IRUKKANGUDI: This place located at the Arjuna nadi and the Vaippar is an important destination for ardent devotees. During the month of Panguni, an important local festival Panguni Uttiram is celebrated here.
