St. Thomas Mount is a hillock located in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India and is situated near the neighbourhood of Guindy. It is very close to Chennai International Airport. St. Thomas Mount has association with St. Thomas, the apostle of Christ. St. Thomas is said to have been martyred here. Earlier St Thomas was called Periyamalai in Tamil which mean the Big Mount.
As the apostle of St. Thomas was martyred here nearly 2000 years ago, hence the Syrian Christians of India trace the origin of their church to the Apostle of St.Thomas. Anglo-Indians occupied this part of Chennai for some time. There is a beautiful and magnificent church built by the Portuguese in 1523 which is located on top of this 300-foot hillock. On 5 February 1986 Pope John Paul II visited St. Thomas Mount.
At the bottom of the mount the Indian Army has an Officer Training Academy (OTA). The railway station here is also called St. Thomas Mount.
