About Ajara


Ajara is a small town in Maharashtra in the Kolhapur district of Maharashtra. The town is known for its greenery and scenic beauty and lies exactly at the doorstep of Karnataka. A special type of rice known as the Ajara Ghansaal is also grown here. If one is fast approaching the Konkan region, this is the last place he/she will come across in the Desh region.

Places to Stay
By virtue of its being a small town, Ajara does not have lodging facilities. One will have to travel 84 km (1 hour and 33 minutes) to the district headquarters of Kolhapur for hotels. Some of the options one can check in to are MTDC Holiday Resort Panhala (Tariff – Rs. 750), Haripriya Grand Hotel (Tariff – Rs. 1,000), Rajat Executive (Tariff – Rs. 1,000), Hotel Landmark (Tariff – Rs. 800) and others.

The official language of the region is Marathi. Hindi is also widely spoken and understood.

The important festivals celebrated Holi in March-April, Ganesh Chathurthi in September and Diwali in October-November.

Places of Interest
The place being only a stop for tourists is not famous for its tourist destinations. Kolhapur may offer a few options such as the Siddhagiri Math, New Palace Museum, Chandrakant Mandare Kaladalan and Shree Mahalaxmi Mandir Devasthan Samiti.

How to Get There

The Sambre and Kolhapur airports are the nearest with distances of 58 km and 69 km respectively.

The nearest railway station is the Belgaum Railway Station in the neighbouring state of Karnataka at a distance of 49 km.

Gadhinglaj is the town from where one can hop on to a state transport bus in order to reach Ajara. When you are booking your tickets through, look out for bus ticket coupons and save money
