Azhwar Thirunagari

Alwarthirunagari, a famous temple on the Tirunelveli-Tiruchendur road, is located on the banks of the Thamiraparani river. The temple is one among the nine temples (known as Nava Tirupathi) dedicated to lord Vishnu. It has thus evolved into a site of major Hindu pilgrimage.

Places to Stay
The village may not have good places for lodging. However, the neighbouring city of Tiruchendur on the coast at a distance of 28 km has a couple of good options such as the Siva Murugan Lodge (Tariff – Rs. 400), Chitra Park Hotel (Tariff – Rs. 500), Tamil Nadu Hotel (Tariff – Rs. 600), Chendur Residency (Tariff – Rs. 700) among others.

The official language of Alwarthirunagari is Tamil.

The important festivals of the area are Pongal in Januray, Vinayagar Chathurthi in August-September and Diwali in October-November.

Tiruchendur is also known as a temple town, and thus has a lot of temples worth visiting. Some of the temples worth a visit are Sri Ponvandu Aiyanar temple, Aazhigudi Maradachan, (also known as the ‘heart attack temple’) and Chettiyapathu Sri Ainthu Veettu Swami Temple among others.
