About Kayathar

Kayathar

A panchayat town in Thoothukudi, Kayatharu also referred to as Kayathar, is situated along National Highway 7 (NH7) between Tirunelveli and Kovilpatti. While the origin of its name is quite debated about, with multiple versions believed to be the source, Kayathar became etched in Indian history for a much tragic reason. In 1799 King Veera Pandiya Kattabomman one of the earliest opponents of the British Rule in India, was hanged on a tamarind tree in Kayatharu.
