About Colachel

Colachel

Colachel is a small town in Tamil Nadu. It lies along the west coast of the Kanyakumari district. It flourished as a Dutch colony in the 18th century. The battle of Colachel is important in Indian history as it was the first time that foreign naval forces were defeated by an Indian army. The town has pleasant climate throughout the year but is slightly humid due to its proximity to the Bay of Bengal.

A village located 7kms from Sirkali and 27kms from Chidambaram, Vaitheeswarankovil is well-known for the Vaitheeswaran Temple or Pullirukkuvelur, a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. Pilgrims visit Vaitheeswaran (God of healing) to pray for curing diseases and to take the holy dip in the Siddhamirtham tank within the temple complex, which is believed to contain nectar that cures illness. The village is also well-known for an ancient form of palm leaf astrology known as Naadi astrology in Tamil.
