Faizabad is the administrative headquarters of the district by the same name in Uttar Pradesh. The city is situated on the banks of the Ghaghra River and was the old capital of the Awadh region. The earliest reference to Faizabad can be found in the mythological Hindu epic Ramayana. The city was a major city during the 1857 mutiny against British rule in India. Interestingly the town of Fyzabad, in Trinidad and Tobago, is named after Faizabad.
