A municipal town in Thrissur District of Kerala, Guruvayur, also written as Guruvayoor or Gurupavanapuri, houses the famous Guruvayur Sree Krishna Temple. Legends state that the temple may be as old as the Guruvayur temple idol, which is estimated to be about 5,000 years old. Although the shrine is not amongst the 108 Divya Desams temples, Guruvayur temple, which is referred to as ‘Bhuloka Vaikunta’ (Holy Abode of Vishnu on Earth), is one of the most important temples for Hindus in Kerala.
