About Kalpa


Kalpa is a small town in the Kinnaur district of the state of Himachal Pradesh. It is situated above the Sutlej river valley. It is famous for its apple orchards and it is a major cash crop for the people of this region. It is also known for its production of Pinus Gerardiana, which is locally known as ‘Chilgoza.’ It is known for its temples dedicated to the Hindu and Buddhist gods and goddesses. 

Places to Stay
There are good hotels in Kalpa. They include Hotel Kinner Kailash (Tariff on contact), The Monk (Tariff - Rs. 1,600), Hotel Apple Pie (Tariff - Rs. 2000) and Hotel Golden Apple (Tariff - Rs. 1,300).

The official language spoken here is Hindi. Other languages spoken here include a Tibeto – Burman dialect known as Kinnauri as well as a Tibeto – Jangram dialect. 

The major festivals celebrated in Kalpa include the Sazo Festival (January), Phagul in February to worship goddess Kali and a festival called Losar to celebrate a New Year as well as Baishkhi. 

Places of Interest
There are plenty of apple orchards that can be seen in Kalpa. Other major places of interest include the river Sutlej, the centuries old Nagin – Narayan Temple and a Buddhist monastery called Hu – Bu – Lan – Car Gompha.
