Kalahasthi

Kalahasthi, originally known as Srikalahasthi, is considered a holy town, situated in Chittor district near Tirupathi, in Andhra Pradesh. The river Swarnamukhi flows through the town. The name of the town is derived from three different animals - ‘Sri’ meaning spider, ‘Kala’ meaning snake and ‘Hasthi’ meaning elephant. Legend has it that these animals worshipped Lord Shiva and found salvation here. The Srikalahasthi temple is the only Hindu temple in the world, which opens its during the Solar and Lunar eclipse. The famous textile painting pattern, Kalamkari, also originated here.
