About Mundkur


Mundkur is a traditional temple village in the Karkala taluka of Udupi district in Karnataka. The historical 1300 year old temple containing Goddess Durga Parameshwari who slayed Mundaka demon is the key source of pilgrimage in Mundkur. That is how the place was named as Mundakooru which later on came to be known as Mundkur. There are 3 villages in the Mundkur district. Temples are the main tourist attraction in Mundkur.

Places to Stay
Mundkur is a small village and hence does not have many hotels nearby. Local home stays are available. Few budget hotels can be found in nearby Udupi district are Shri Ramakrishna Hotel (Tariff – Rs 650), Hotel Udupi Residency (Tariff – Rs. 675), and Hotel Sri Ram Residency (Tariff – Rs. 776).

The official language of Mundkur is Tulu. The alternative languages spoken are Kannada and Konkani.

Some of the major local festivals of Mundkur that are celebrated with great fanfare include Annual Car-Festival in mid-February, Ganesh Chaturthi in September, and Navaratri in October.

How to Get There

The Bajpe Airport in Mangalore (25 km) is the nearest airport to Mundkur.

There is no railway station in Mundkur. Two of the nearest railway stations are Mulki (10 km) and Padubidri (12 km).

Regular bus services ply from Mundkur to connecting cities such as Mangalore, Mysore, Karkala, Udupi, Kinnigoli, Mulki, and Kundpura in Karnataka. SRS Travels and VRL Travels are two good bus operators connecting to Mundkur at affordable bus tariffs. Volvo bus is the most preferred choice of all travellers these days.
