The name ‘Vaniyambadi’ has been derived from the word ‘Vani’ which is another name for the Hindu Goddess Saraswati and ‘padi’ which means ‘to sing.’ According to folklore, Vani was requested to sing in this area by the Shiva and Vishnu who are popular Hindu Gods. Leather tanning and coconut plantations are key sources of livelihood in Vaniyambadi. The population mix of Vaniyambadi comprises of people from the Hindu, Jain and Christian communities.
