Vasai, now a part of the Vasai-Virar city, is situated in the state of Maharashtra. It was historically called ‘Bassein’ and it was here that the Portugese built a fort to display their naval strength. It was in the 18th century that the Maratha army took over the Vasai Fort, which was later conquered by the British.
