A coastal Municipality in Kozhikode district of Kerala, Vatakara is known to be the birthplace of Unniyarcha, Aromal Chekavar, Thacholi Othenan and the legendary heroes of the Vadakkanpattu. The Moorad River flows into the Arabian Sea at a point close to the town and since it is a coastal town fishing is one of the main occupation here. The town, which houses many well-known temples, is also the birthplace of Kunjali Marakkar.
